Which “motionese” parameters change with children's age? Disentangling attention-getting from action-structuring modifications

چکیده
Modified action demonstration—dubbed motionese— has been proposed as a way to help children recognize the structure and meaning of actions. However, until now, it investigated only in young infants. This brief research report presents findings from cross-sectional study parental demonstrations three groups 8–11, 12–23, 24–30-month-old that applied seven motionese parameters; second youngest group participants longitudinally corroborate results. Results both studies suggested four parameters (Motion Pauses, Pace, Velocity, Acceleration) seem by organizing motion pauses. Whereas these persist over different ages, other (Demonstration Length, Roundness, Range) occur predominantly younger serve organize infants' attention on basis movement. are discussed terms facilitative vs. pedagogical learning.

Investigating motionese: The effect of infant-directed action on infants' attention and object exploration.
Adults modify their communication when interacting with infants, and these modifications have been tied to infant attention. However, the effect infant-directed action on infant behavior is understudied. This study examined whether infant-directed action affects infants, specifically their attention to and exploratory behaviors with objects. Forty-eight 8- to 10-month-old infants and their care...
متن کاملDisentangling gaze shifts from preparatory ERP effects during spatial attention.
After a cue directing attention to one side, anterior event-related potentials (ERPs) show contralateral negativity (anterior directing attention negativity, ADAN). It is unclear whether ADAN effects are contaminated by contralateral negativity arising from residual gaze shifts. Conversely, it is possible that ADAN-related potentials contaminate the horizontal electrooculogram (HEOG), via volum...
متن کاملInfluenza: getting our attention.
Influenza has become an increasingly frequent topic in the news and medical literature. Although the 1918 influenza pandemic killed more people than died during the first World War, for much of the 20th century, the disease was considered of interest primarily during the winter months, as emergency departments and hospitals filled with sick patients. Less than a decade ago, few pediatricians in...
متن کاملDoes the level at which cognitive change occurs change with age?
Increased age in adulthood is associated with systematically more negative cognitive change, but relatively little is known about the nature of change at different ages. The present study capitalized on the hierarchical structure of cognitive abilities to investigate possible age differences in the level at which change operates. Reductions in the longitudinal associations between test scores w...
متن کاملDisentangling chronological age from age of onset in children and adolescents with obsessive--compulsive disorder.
Although paediatric obsessive--compulsive disorder (OCD) is increasingly recognized as a putative developmental subtype of the disorder, it remains uncertain as to whether additional subtyping by age at onset in childhood or adolescence is warranted. Subjects included children and adolescents meeting DSM-III-R and DSM-IV criteria for OCD referred to a specialized OCD clinic. All youth were syst...
